Maybury Primary School Opening Delayed to October 2024

WEST CRAIGS – The eagerly awaited Maybury Primary School in West Craigs has had its opening date pushed back from August to October 2024, according to the Edinburgh Evening News. This delay means that Primary 1 pupils will begin their education at East Craigs Primary School before transferring to the new facility in October.

The new primary school is set to be a significant addition to the community, featuring several innovative aspects. Notably, it will include a GP surgery on its grounds, the first of its kind in Edinburgh. This health centre, funded by the NHS, will have the capacity to handle up to 10,000 patients, making it a valuable resource for the local area.

In a first for Edinburgh, Maybury Primary School will be built to the Passivhaus standard, a highly energy-efficient construction method that will help regulate air temperature in classrooms, creating a more comfortable learning environment. This approach supports The City of Edinburgh Council’s 2030 net-zero target by significantly reducing the building's energy consumption.

The school's catchment area will encompass the new housing estates in Cammo and West Craigs, the latter of which will include at least 1,700 new homes, as reported by the West Craigs Official Website. The facility will be able to accommodate 630 primary pupils and 128 nursery pupils, with three Primary 1 intakes. Additionally, the school will be spread over two floors and feature a state-of-the-art 2G sports pitch suitable for hockey, tennis, and recreational football.

The construction of Maybury Primary School is part of a broader initiative to enhance educational infrastructure in the area, addressing the needs of a growing population. The City of Edinburgh Council has highlighted the importance of such developments in meeting future demands and supporting community growth.

In addition to the educational and healthcare facilities, there are job openings for Early Years Practitioners listed on the UK Government website, offering positions up to 36 hours per week with salaries ranging between £26,788 and £30,751 annually. This presents a significant employment opportunity within the new school environment.

For ongoing updates and more information, residents can visit the West Craigs Official Website and The City of Edinburgh Council’s website. The community looks forward to the completion of this vital project and the benefits it will bring to West Craigs and the surrounding areas.
